The snow in the garden is thawing fast almost as if it knows that the Christmas festivities will shortly be a distant memory.’ My lovely’ will be ‘ sorting out the house’, getting back to normal and Michael is sitting upstairs in his room working on his various reports. I am quite keen to draft an entry for New Year’s Day reflecting my view of the year ahead.

Today is not anticlimactic after the excitement of Christmas but merely a question of taking stock. A quiet contemplatives day.

Another fantastic day’s cricket for England. As one of the columnist said, it is a day you will never forget . England is on the verge of victory. They continued batting on and despite losing two wickets fairly cheaply, early on, finished with a total of 513 leading Australia by 246 rounds. The star of the show was Jonathan Trott who finished 164 not out. England then chipped away at the Australians, taking six wickets for 169. Still way behind England and well-deserved victory should be theirs tomorrow morning. I was saddened by the Australian captain, Ponting’s unsportsmanlike demonstrations with the umpires over a decision which had gone against them. Such a pity for someone who has undoubtedly been a great hero in Australia for so many years to demonstrate such bad sportsmanship and probably retire on a sour note .
